This book presents the 2020 Digital Platform Economy Index (DPE Index). The DPE Index integrates two separate but related literatures on ecosystems, namely, the digital ecosystem and the entrepreneurial ecosystem. This new framework situates digital entrepreneurship within the broader context of users, platforms, and institutions, such that two biotic entities (users and agents) actuate individual agency, and two abiotic components (digital infrastructure and digital platforms) form the external environment. The DPE Index framework includes 12 pillars that integrate the digital and the entrepreneurship ecosystems. Here, the authors report on the DPE Index, the four sub-indices, and the 12 pillar values for 116 countries as well as provide a cluster analysis based on the 12 pillars.

Zoltan Acs is Professor of Management at the London School of Economics (UK), Professor at the Schar School of Policy and Government and Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Public Policy at George Mason University (Fairfax, VA, USA), and Founder and President of the Global Entrepreneurship and Development Institute (GEDI Institute, Washington, D.C., USA). He is also co-editor and founder of Small Business Economics (Springer), a leading entrepreneurship journal. He has published more than 200 articles in international scholarly journals and over 35 books.
László Szerb is University Professor at the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Pécs (Hungary). He is also the creator, along with Zoltan Acs, of the Global Entrepreneurship Index (GEI). His teaching and research focuses mainly on small business and entrepreneurship related subjects. He has published extensively in entrepreneurship topics including the determinants of entrepreneurship, competitiveness and performance.
Éva Somogyiné Komlósi is a Research Fellow in the MTA-PTE Innovation and Economic Growth Research Group at the University of Pécs (Hungary). Her main area of research is the investigation of the effects of institutional factors on entrepreneurship.
Esteban Lafuente is Professor in the Department of Management at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (Barcelona, Spain). His also an Editor of Small Business Economics (Springer), a leading entrepreneurship journal. His research focuses on the economic analysis of organizations, with special emphasis on models of managerial economics and topics in applied econometrics. His research has been published in a variety of international journals.
Abraham K. Song is Assistant Professor of Public Policy, Pepperdine University, Graduate School of Education and Psychology, Los Angeles, USA. He teaches courses on research methods and public policy. His current research examines state business incentives and digital platforms. In one stream of research, he conducts a program evaluation of state business incentives. In another stream of research, he studies the emergence of digital platforms and their implications for entrepreneurship and policy. Dr. Song is a research affiliate at the Milken Institute’s Center for Regional Economics and California, conducting research to inform and activate innovative economic and policy solutions to drive job creation and industry expansion. His research was awarded the Provost’s Office Dissertation Fellowship, Wilkes Fellowship (D.C. Policy Center), Best Paper Award at the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP), and the Vernon E. Jordan, Jr. Doctoral Fellowship (Economic Club of Washington D.C.).
