ERSA is proud to renew its contribution, together with the Regional Studies Association and AESOP, for the organisation of the Master Class and the University workshops within the framework of the 16th edition of the European Week of Regions and Cities (#EURegionsWeek).

The #EURegionsWeek is the biggest event world-wide on regional and urban development.  It is organised and led by the European Commission.

Master Class
The Master Class targets PhD students and early career researchers in the field of regional and urban policy. Its purpose is to improve the understanding of EU Cohesion Policy and its research potential among a selection of European PhD students and early-career researchers.

The University Workshops

The workshops focus on new research on regional and urban development, with renowned academics and researchers in the field of EU cohesion policy and related policies from different European countries.

ERSA co-ordinates the two following workshops:

Migrants, asylum seekers, refugees and regional economic development

Europe is currently experiencing its worst global refugee crisis in recent history. The numbers of forcefully displaced populations have significantly increased with particular areas being mostly and disproportionally affected. This session considers ways in which European cities and regions can successfully address the challenge of hosting and integrating asylum seekers, refugees and other migrants, highlighting both the humanitarian imperatives as well as relevant socio-economic issues.

Thirty years of EU Cohesion Policy: What works? Where? for Whom?

Over the past thirty years a variety of approaches and tools have been experimented in order to promote development in all regions of the European Union (EU). The future of EU Cohesion Policy crucially depends on our capacity to take stock of past experience and figure out what works in practice and under what conditions. Researchers, practitioners and policy makers will discuss what policies, programs and projects have delivered concrete and measurable results and what conditions need to be in place in order to maximize achievements and address local needs with limited resources.
