The emergence of evolutionary economic geography (EEG – Boschma & Maritn, 2007, 2010; Martin & Sunley, 2010, 2015; Martin, 2012) has largely influenced the way in which several regional science research projects are conducted. On the one hand, the notion of resilience has guided many research projects, particularly in the context of responses to macroeconomic or territorial shocks (or events). On the other hand, the notion of path dependency and development trajectory has contributed to proposing a new way of viewing the development difficulties of certain regions or territories, particularly in a perspective where past actions are largely dependent on future actions.

The duality between the success and failure of regional development has a considerable history (REF). While metropolises have long relied on the advantages of spatial concentration to promote their development, smaller territories have had to focus their perspectives mainly on territorial assets, which do not necessarily counterbalance the advantages of cities. This division has contributed to the development and strengthening of a form of polarization as well as a rise in the left-behind (Rodriguez-Posé, 2020, 2018). While some territories are doing well and benefiting from the growth of certain environments, others have more difficulty extricating themselves from a difficult situation (REF).

In all cases, the different realities have led to a resurgence of economic, spatial and territorial inequalities. This theme is once again taking an important place in regional science themes. Whether it is the return of the debate linking the urban-rural opposition, despite all its variations and new proposals integrating various gradients and the rise of medium-sized cities, the consequence of inequalities on the quality of life of residents, in particular with the significant increase in residential real estate values and access to property for young families or teleworking and the reduction in the use of office spaces, the role of public policies in a context of globalization combined with the rise of participation and citizen struggles, the rise of “not in my backyard” (or NIMBY) and the presence of certain discourses introducing disinformation, or the strong pressure on resources and the preservation of the environment in a context of economic transformation.

In this context, this year’s conference wishes to open up to the different themes that have and continue to influence territorial processes, whether at the environmental, social or economic level. A better understanding of recent phenomena and the different and recent bifurcations of territorial development trajectories is necessary to better understand and dissect territorial realities and their heterogeneity if we wish to influence future trajectories.
