3rd ERSA-REGIO Academic Lecture 2019
24 October 2019, DG REGIO premises, Brussels, Belgium

Speaker:  Prof. Jouke van Dijk, Professor of Regional Labour Market Analysis, University of Groningen, Faculty of Spatial Sciences, Department Economic Geography more

Presentation title: Human Capital, Inequality and Resilient Regional Labour Markets

Abstract: Human capital is a crucial (production) factor in regional development. Human capital is embodied in individuals and strongly linked to education, labour productivity and innovation. In a broader sense, the level of education is also linked to health, life expectancy, life satisfaction and well-being. Education is also a crucial determinant in geographical mobility in terms of migration and commuting and as a result of sorting processes leading to an unequal spread of human capital over space. This may cause an unequal regional economic development and increasing differences between urban and rural areas in terms of well-being, resilience and inclusiveness. What is the effect of consumption and production externalities at the personal and regional level? And how is this influenced by trends on the labour market like flexibilization over time and space, self-employment, automation and robotization, self-driving cars? What is the effect on individual labour market behaviour and the outcomes in terms of income and unemployment?  What are the implications for regional and labour market policy?

Discussant: Dr. Maria Abreu, University Lecturer in Land Economy, Department Of Land Economy, University of Cambridge, UK more
